Dairy is a bit of a strange product if you think about it. It’s literally a broth of cells suspended in some sort of media that’s supposed to help young mammals grow. Actually quite gross if you start to think about it too much. That’s why is spoils so easily if you keep it too long or too warm. The stuff is basically made for growing and replicating like crazy.
It’s still pretty sweet and delicious though. I’ll admit it, it’s freaking tasty. You can put it in your coffee or tea, or even drink it straight up. It’s a great source of calcium and a great source of calories too if you don’t have time to make breakfast. You can use it as the base for a quick and easy protein shake that will help you get your morning started off on the right foot.
That’s not all it’s good for though. In fact, there are tons of dishes you can make that are absolutely succulent that simply wouldn’t exist without milk, cream, or at least dairy of some sort. I’m going to discuss my favorites with you here today.
First of all, there’s ice cream. God I love ice cream. I don’t even care that you can get it in so many ridiculously delicious flavors thanks to awesome companies like Ben & Jerry’s. What I love about ice cream is it’s smooth, velvety texture. I love the way it melts in my mouth and fills my taste buds with satisfaction. My mouth’s just watering thinking about it! I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves ice cream, you’d actually probably have a difficult to find someone who doesn’t like ice cream. Even people who are lactose intolerant will slip up from time to time because they can’t resist it. I suppose that’s saying something.
What about creme brulee? Have you ever had that? If not, stop what you’re doing right now and go buy some. This very minute. I’m not even joking. This stuff is as addictive as a nicotine addiction. Luckily it’s not available all over the place or I’d eat so much of it I’d need a forklift to get around. It’s purely delectable, and actually quite easy to make if you’re handy in the kitchen. You basically have to mix eggs, milk, and sugar, then bake it in a water bath (so it doesn’t get too hot) until it’s solidified. Then you let it chill for a few hours, take it out, sprinkle some sugar on top, and brown it with direct heat. The proper way is to use a torch, but you can get creative if you don’t have one. Voila, you have a fancy French dessert.
Perhaps my favorite of all though is the tres leches cake. Do you know why they call it tres leches? It literally translates to three milks. Not only regular milk, but also sweetened and condensed milk. This stuff is so good you simply can’t hold back. It’s one of mother nature’s gifts to us as humans here on earth.
Do you have favorite milk dishes? Please, give me some tips! I’m always up to try something new.
