5 ways to prevent blog burnout

20120131

1 \\ Sleep.
I read an article while traveling that said one of the main causes of depression is lack of sleep. As a friend of many freelance designers and full time bloggers I know for a fact that sleep is a privilege for all of us. Fact is nobody can function well without resting enough.

2 \\ Do something you like with someone you like.
Try your best to do something you like as least once a week. Get out of your office often, for lunch time, for snack time of just to spend some time with friends.

3 \\ Do not stay in for days.
Working on your blog or dwelling on it all the time will only make you feel dissatisfied with your work. I find it very important to unwind and work on other projects unrelated to my work. I stay away from lonely places because those make you lose your passion.

4 \\ Break The Routine.
I'm always up for an impromptu anything. If you feel knee deep in work chances are you can actually give yourself some time to breathe so do something unexpected and exciting.

5 \\ That's right...
Your readers understand you are human, or I would expect them to. Keep your blog real and your blog-friends updated, if you are feeling too blue to blog someone might come to your rescue and offer to guest-post to lighten your load but if you keep everything to yourself you might find that you are only giving 40% of the 100% you could be giving.

What do you do to prevent blog burnout? Care to share?

Be your Own Hero Print

20120124

I was speaking to my friend, Jules last week and we were on a frantic catching-up session. She recently had a baby and her amazing husband, who is fully tattooed but is in its core the nicest guy you'll meet, took it upon himself to buy what he calls a "reno-home" for them in the outskirts of London.

My friend is a great story-teller, she speaks and I'm transported to the places she visits. I could tell she was not gladly surprise about her husband's purchase but as we spoke she started telling me how the house is challenging her more in an emotional sense than a physical one. She said to me... "I don't want to be that kind of woman that always looks at others and craves to be them. I don't want to be a bundle on unmet expectations either."

I digress.

You know how in movies when a character hears those words that cave deep into its soul, the whole scenery starts shrinking and blurring - and by the end of the last word you can only see the mouth of the person speaking?

That's exactly how I felt, her words echoed in my head and made my stomach ache a little. Holy Swear word!,  I said - The woman had given me an answer to all of my recent pondering questions. Why are people stealing my work? Why can't I get myself to blog like before? Why am I so tired lately? Why was that person so unappreciated of my efforts? - The answers is because I'm a bundle of unmet expectations. All I could think about that day was how not to be that person, how to be OKAY and eventually FINE with all these things around me.

Simple, by being my own hero - stop expecting people to not copy my art just committing to never copying some else's (and send the the according fine of course). To be with others as I expect them to be with me but not expect anything in return. I know it's easy to say and hard to make so I want to remember this lesson. I made this print and it's up on my board. Be my own hero, checked!

Are you a bundle of unmet expectations? or are you your own hero?

Basic Food Photography Advice For the SLR-less

20120118

If you love food and want to share your recipes with your readers you might think that the only way is to buy an expensive SLR camera - Truth is, any camera makes the cut if used properly. Food Photography goes beyond equipment, you need just the right balance of styling, lighting and enthusiasm.

Herewith my secret potion:

Use Optical Zoom

Your point and shoot camera should have great optical zoom features. The optical zoom will allow you to frame your food well and it will produce a higher quality food image. Most affordable cameras come with a 10.1 digital zoom. Now, you have to pay attention. When you zoom in you will see a line dividing the levels of zoom between optical and digital. Learn more about the two here.

Use a Tripod

A point and shoot camera is usually slow and not matter how steady your hands are when taking a picture your hands will always shake. A tripod offers the steadiness you need, it makes your photos sharp and all the edges clear.

Use Natural Light

People will say, whenever possible use natural light... I say with a point and shoot. Always, use natural light. Use the natural lighting as a way to compliment the look of your food. Do not take the photograph if you are directly in front of the sunlight. You always want the natural light to be at the backside of your food. Another great tip when using natural light. Shoot between 8:00am and 10:00am just before the sun is shinning at its best.

Dim that light (!)

Use a white sheet or see-through curtain to dim the harshness of the light and give your photos a better perspective without adding shadows. When the light comes from an artificial source or the natural light is too harsh your food can look overly greasy and unappealing.

Style

One of the best tips I've learned is to learn to style the scene. Try using more than one prop, different color plates or interesting tools but keep the focus on the food.

Make it look delicious

Always clean up the edges of the plates, keep vegetables colorful and crisp and (as per my experience). Set up and then cook. I am big on rustic cooking and rustic-looking food photography. Don't over-do the embellishments, fake grill marks and plastic cheese are not an option.

Take your time

You should shoot from every angle and trying different focus points. That's why you should style and then shoot. I use programs and equipment that allows me to transfer the images to my screen and review them at a big scale I then take more photos of the angles that look the best but if you don't have that option, always take lots of photos.

When processing your photos

Don't over-do the effects, try to keep it as clean and you can and try not to use any of the default camera effects like "antique" "sunrise" or else. Use normal settings and optical zoom only.

Practice

Just like you would with any other hobby or art form. It takes practice to master good photos, specially with a point and shoot camera because it's tricky. Take a lot of photos and be patient

Mobilize your blog

20120113

One of the keys to keeping your blog afloat is keeping it current. Most people now surf the web outside of home: phones are the most popular tools to do so. Many blogs offer a mobile version of your site, but not all of them are up to a modern visual standard nor offer the functionality your readers deserve.

I use blogger mobile as my default mobile browser but now I introduced Mippin to this space. All I needed to do was submit the URL and/or RSS feed (you can add up to 4 different feeds) and my mobile site was created. One of the many advantages of Mippin is being able to customize and design the layout with no coding experience. They guide you through a step-by-step user-friendly customization and it takes less than 5 minutes. Mippin makes the site compatible with all phones, including Android, iPhone, Symbian and Blackberry.

I added my link on the sidebar... so take out your phones and carry blogmilk wherever you go.

Overcoming lack of nspiration

20120112

sparrow

I've been working incredibly long hours lately and my blog has taken the back seat for a while. Between the new shop and trying to keep up with making themes to sell my free time has gone down from a 30% to ZERO. Three nights ago I broke my bed time record. I went to bed a six in the am and woke up at 8:00am that same morning, can you believe it? .After 2 hours of sleep I just couldn't get myself to figure something to blog about. Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. This has been a wonderful, precious and indulging time but inspiration has not necessarily been an item on my list these days.

After changing everything up last night I realized how little things make me feel comfortable and inspired and I wanted to share them with you. Please leave your tips in the comment section.

Live, then blog.  I find it hard sometimes to get myself out of the house. I tend to put my commitments first and I often realize there's no blogging without a life. Going out, speaking to people, reading, everything around us is a source of inspiration.

Use your resources. Flickr, Pinterest and other image based sites are a great source of inspiration. Reading other blogs or magazines put you in contact with trends and styles emerging within the blogging world.

Make. Take time out to do something you love. Work with your hands and you will most definitely jump-start the creative vibe.

How do you overcome those inspiration-less days?

Free Post Planner

20120102

I have been attempting to make a calendar for 2012 and actually started designing the layout... half the way in I realized I needed a more practical/simple way to plan my posts, that's how the idea for this planner was born. My main goal for 2012 is to "simplify" my life so that I can function everyday without feeling dog-tired by bed time.

I happen to be an extensive planner, annoyingly attentive to detail and o.c.d. I would write my monthly post-planner and go from topics to sub-topics, to trends and so on, all I have to say is there was an index (period).  Even though I planned like that I always had an anxious feeling that I was probably being a little repetitive in certain themes. Funny how things work at times, planning can actually be a lot more accurate if you make it practical.

That's were this planner comes to play. It is practical, Eco-friendly and beautifully minimalistic. One A4 page will print the entire 12 month calendar. The sides are used for notes, it includes weekends and you can add holidays depending on the area were you live in. Most importantly it's free and you can download to your computer or print at once by clicking on "download now".

Hope you like it.
