Last month I made a q+a post and that same days started receiving new questions in my inbox and twitter. I have to admit there where some extremely funny ones and some that came from anonymous users that didn't make sense and cracked me up. I decided I'd post each and every question this time around but first, I wanted to address something that I didn't know was a common concern for freelancers and woman in general. I've been asked several times how I dress for meetings and how I encourage myself to dress nicely even when I work from home.
Now, I kind of feel like I'll be stating the obvious here but I personally had a hard time with routines and getting myself out of my baggy sweatpants even when the "how to" was so evident.
First of all (and yes, I must start with this because it is really important) - Cut yourself some slack. Every time I make changes and try something new I do it with such passion that it quickly starts to take it's toll on me as I put so much time and effort into it - so when you start making changes in your life do it slowly but surely.
The easiest changes you can make in order to encourage yourself to dress better everyday is to:
01/ Remove all eyesores from your closet. If there's anything there that resembles a rag, it's got to go!
02/ Do not break the bank when shopping by getting a million pieces. Get one quality piece and take good care of it
03/ Divide your closet into sections so you know what to wear every day.
Place your nighties and sweatpants out of sight and your every day clothes at hand
04/ Become interested in buying "essentials" - My day to day wardrobe includes v-neck plain shirts, black jeans, baggy shorts, a nice pair of pumps, hightops and a pair of black sandals. Most of my clothes are black which makes accessorizing extremely easy.
You can add or remove essentials as Seasons change
05/ Do not hoarder clothes. The key to having a nice wardrobe is to invest in quality pieces that you can mix and match
Remember that we all have different life-styles and needs, apply only the things you find suitable for your own life and play around with your clothes every day. I'm aware that I'm not an expert when it comes to fashion and I need loads of advice myself so if you want to share your tips with me below, I'd be extremely happy.
P.S. Stick around, due to the number of times this question was asked we now have a fashion giveaway on the way!

this is such a good primer for beginners!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joy! I'm kind of itching to see everybody's wardrobe since yesterday. ha!
DeleteA giveaway-approved by you? It's sure to be fantastic!
ReplyDeleteBecause the weather's practically unchanging in SF, I've come to embrace the uniform-now I add new button down shirts, sweaters or skirts to my wardrobe, but always know how they'll mix in with the rest of my clothes-and it makes dressing so easy!
Yes! That's key and some times I have trouble with that. Making your new pieces mix what you already have. I think sometimes I have a hard time doing that because most shops have 4 very distinctive collections ever year but us here, we only get summer and winter so whenever I buy clothes in between I get a things that really don't match. Thanks for sharing that tip! Can't wait to post the giveaway! xx
